In the limelight

The Project “Factory Russia” created under the guidance of the Ministry of culture of the Russian Federation especially for exposition of Russian pavilion in XII Architecture Biennale in Venice aroused the broad resonance in architectural groups in Russia and all over the world. Prior to the opening of Venice exposition Sergey Tchoban presented the concept of the Project in the New York Center of Architecture (http://main.aiany.org) on invitation of Vladimir Belogolovsky, president of the company “Intercontinental Curatorial Project Inc.” Then immediately after starting of Biennale on the 4th of September Tchoban gave a lecture on his experience of reconstruction of buildings of various applications and on the concept “Factory Russia”, as well as on the architectural projects included in it in Moscow in the Institute for Media, Architecture and Design “Strelka”.

After that on the 20th of September took place the presentation of the Project “Factory Russia” in Madrid organized by the company “Intercontinental Curatorial Project Inc.” with the support of the Ministry of Housing of Spain. And finally on the 16th of October 2010 took place the large-scale presentation of the Project “Factory Russia” in the international festival “Zodchestvo” that became the launching platform for it in some specified sense.

The year before in 2009 Sergey Tchoban and Irina Shipova won the competition announced by the curator of the festival “Zodchestvo” Jury Avakumov and got the right to show their exhibition “Reserve stock. Industrial architecture of the past – resource for the future”. Unofficially this competition was presented as the choosing of curator of Russian pavilion for the forthcoming Venice Biennale. And finally Sergey Tchoban became this curator. Together with two other curators Pavel Khoroshilov and Grigory Revzin he developed the project of reconstruction of one building in the idea of revival of the whole city hereby formulating the basic principle of the Project “Factory Russia”.

Appreciating the origins the Project “Factory Russia” returned to the festival “Zodchestvo”. However, not as the large-scale exhibition (the exposition itself will stay in Venice till the closure of Biennale on the 21st of November), but in more personalized version: in the format of the presentation of all 5 architectural concepts included in the Project by the authors themselves – the leading Russian architects invited by the curators of the exposition for the development of some objects located in the territory of the city Vyshny Volochok. This unique feature of the Project – the joining of several creative teams in the frames of one concept, each having granted the right to find its own methodical, architectural and ethical method of the realization of the concept. Evgeny Gerasimov (“Evgeny Gerasimov and partners” Saint Petersburg), Vladimir Plotkin (Creative production enterprise “Reserve”, Moscow), Sergey Skuratov (“Sergey Skuratov architects”, Moscow), Sergey Kuznetsov (“SPEECH Tchoban&Kuznetsov”, Moscow), Alena Akhmadullina and Nikita Yavejn (“Studio 44”, Saint Petersburg) told the audience in the Central Exhibition Hall “Manezh” about nuances and specific character of their projects.

The review of the architectural projects was anticipated by the short excursus in the past and the present of the city Vyshny Volochok presented by the mayor of the city Oleg Menshikov who had kindly agreed to participate in the presentation.

The interest to the Project “Factory Russia”, whereof many people in Russia heard but not saw with their own eyes, was increased manifold by unprecedented starry cast of the speakers. The participants of the presentation, usually speaking solo with their master-class or lecture, this time gathered on one stage as they had gathered for the work on the Project “Factory Russia” on invitation of Sergey Tchoban. As a result the presentation attracted large audience having become one of the greatest and most interesting events in the program of the international festival “Zodchestvo”.

Collection of masters

Architects rightly consider their profession to be creative, seeing it as the specific sphere of Art. But architecture itself is rarely interpreted as object of art, or rather doesn’t appear as it especially within the walls of museums of fine arts. Perhaps the only form of fixation of architectural ideas and observations, deserved the status of independent art form, became artificial graphic including not only drawings and sketchers of the architects of the past and the present, but also more poetic genres of landscape drawings with inclusion of buildings or their details, architectural fantasies, as well as the independent genre of the sketches of the theatrical scenery.

The exhibition got the expressive name “The golden age of the architectural graphic”, since in the specialists’ opinion never had the architectural graphic achieved such popularity and virtuosity of implementation as in the works of Italian and French masters creating in the end of XVIII – beginning of XIX century, in the transitional period from the late Baroque to the flourishing Classicism. Multi-Media-Moll. Sochi

The Preparation to forthcoming in 2014 winter Olympic games if actively lead in Sochi. Besides the construction of sport objects meeting the international standards of the competitions of such level the search of the decision of the common town building, engineering and transport problems, creation of the necessary objects of infrastructure are lead here. The leading Russian architectural workshops are enabled in designing for Olympic Sochi.

The bureau “SPEECH Tchoban&Kuznetsov” also takes part in the designing of the Olympic objects. Last year we took part in the competition on the project of stadium of the opening of the Winter Olympic games, and now upon the order of the Corporation “Inzhtransstroy” developed the concept of mail Media center of the Olympiad.

In the trapezoidal section located in the Imeretinskaya valley in close proximity to the complex of the main sport constructions will be located the Media center itself including International broadcasting center and Main press center, as well as 3-stars hotel for journalists for 600 places. The total square of the building included in the complex Media center is almost 150 thousands square meters. Such considerable dimensions and the importance of the role which this complex will play made special demands to the project decisions.

Architecture of the building will be carrying easily understandable subtext drawing the parallels with the traditional symbols of Olympic movement and local colour. The configuration of the complex and façade decisions providing for active use of remote construction in the shape of pergolas from horizontal lamellas, playing role of additional protection against sun and other natural phenomena, not only meet local climate conditions but also carry in themselves image-bearing compound resonating with plastic of the unique Sochi relief.

The last moment is stressed with the help of “green roof” because of which the complex will get one more functional level, on which the arboretum with different plants will be laid out and the recreation area will be arranged.

The additional factor considered and worked through in the concept became the prospective planning of use of the complex after the end of the Olympiad. Under the intension of the city authorities the trade entertaining center will be located here. That is, already now planning and engineering solutions must be laid in the project, that will provide full-grown functioning of the building, high level of efficiency and convenience of use of its infrastructure in two ways: as Media center and subsequently as modern Mega-moll.

All above mentioned features of the concept suggested by the bureau “SPEECH Tchoban&Kuznetsov” were estimated and approved in the regular meeting of the Architecture section under the Technical council “GK Olympstroy” taken place on the 28th of April 2010. In the meeting participated the chief architect “GK Olympstroy” O.A. Kharchenko, the chief architect of Krasnodar territory U.V. Rysin, President of the Union of the architects RF A.V. Bokov, honorable President of the Union of the architects RF U.P. Gnedovsky, President of the Russian Academy of Architecture and Construction Sciences A.P. Kudryavtsev, vice-president of the Russian Academy of Architecture and Construction Sciences V.I. Travush, President of the Russian Academy of Arts Z.K. Tsereteli, Chairman of the Union of the painters of Russia A.N. Kovalchuk and the heads of architectural workshops. The architectural section was created in October 2009 under the initiative of former chief architect of Saint Petersburg Oleg Kharchenko soon after his appointment in the position of the chief architect of the corporation “Olympstroy”. Under his intention involvement to the discussion of the future Olympic objects of the competent experts allows to control their architectural and artistic quality. Only the concepts that have got the approval of the Architectural section will be admitted to the further passing of approving instances with the right of further realization.
